Dorm Cleaning: Spring Edition

You may be able to put it off for a few days, but you can’t avoid the inevitable: cleaning your dorm.

If you live on campus, you know better than anyone that it doesn’t take long for your dorm to get messy. Textbooks and papers are lying around your desk, clothes are piling up everywhere, and the fridge is overcrowded with food that you bought more than a few days ago. Cleaning your dorm will also offer several benefits. You will have less to do when it’s time to move out at the end of the school year, and you won’t have to guess where your notes or homework are the night before an exam. That said, here are some tips on how to clean your dorm.

  1. Make your bed

The best way to start is by making your bed. Put on a clean set of sheets and watch your dorm immediately transform. Making your bed daily also sets the tone for the entire day and it reflects your entire personal space and mind. It’s a good and soothing thing to know that our bed is made in our house, waiting for us when we’re having one of those bad days.

  1. Clean up your drawers and closet

Take out all your clothes out of your drawers and refold them. Take out what you no longer wear and get rid of it or donate it. Store your heavy clothes in a designated area, such as a bin, and keep the spring clothes you plan to wear neatly folded in the drawers. If you want something different for your closet, try organizing by color or category. Organizing your clothes will help your day-to-day life go smoother. You won’t be running late in the morning, looking for that blue shirt you want to wear to class.

  1. Clean around your desk and dust other surfaces

Use disinfectant wipes to wipe off your entire desk and clear any unwanted objects. Soon, it will feel like move-in day again. Everything will be neat. Even buy some flowers or spray some Febreze to add nice spring scent.

  1. Organize your fridge

Make sure nothing has hit the expiration date. You can even take everything out and you’re your fridge down. Depending on the size, it shouldn’t take you that long.

  1. Take out the trash

Empty all your trash cans and get the bags to the nearest dumpster, weekly. Having trash lying around can often get out of hand, and it will produce a bad smell.

  1. Vacuum

You also walk all over campus and bring dirt, dust, and other pollen to the room. Vacuuming should be the last step as it will pick up all those crumbs and tiny pieces you get on the carpet every day.
