During spring break S.E.R.V.E. offered a variety of opportunities for students at the University to enrich the community of Pasco County through community service and development.

On March 18, students from S.E.R.V.E. visited the Ohana Horse Rescue in Brooksville, Florida.

Ohana Horse Rescue is a sanctuary for horses run by a woman named Carrie Young.  Since the opening of Ohana Horse Rescue in 2007, many horses have been rescued from abandonment or being put to sleep. Carrie Young, her family and volunteers have worked to make a home for each and every horse they have rescued.

Carrie Young gave members of S.E.R.V.E. a unique hands-on experience with each animal encouraging the students to interact with the animals. The one precaution was to not touch behind the horses’ ears because they did not like that.

Members from S.E.R.V.E. cleaned water pans and gave the horses a fresh pan of water and crisps.

Other students helped by raking the front yard. This little amount of energy helped to give the Ohana Rescue a natural face lift and made a world of difference to the residents.

If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring a horse at the Ohana Horse Rescue please contact Cattie Young at 727-326-7827 or ohanahorserescue@yahoo.com.
