Women’s Lacrosse Starting off on the Right Foot

After a pretty good 11-6 record last year, the Saint Leo Women’s Lacrosse team looked to make the 2019 season even better behind some of their new transfers and veterans. They enter the season poised and ready to attack hopefully taking the conference by storm.

Their first game was a home opener on Feb. 15. The start to 2019 was perfect as they gathered up an impressive win against Rockhurst University 15-8. They couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game as they quickly jumped to a six-goal lead from five different scorers.

The first half was all Lions as they dominated on both sides of the ball giving them a huge 10-2 lead in the first half. While it looked like the Lions had this game in the bag, Rockhurst quickly rallied back to outscore Saint Leo 6-5 in the second half. However, the Lions didn’t give up and with the 5 points of their own, plus the huge lead in the first half they sealed the deal becoming 1-0 on the season.

Saint Leo’s main form of offense came from junior transfer Janee Deluca, junior Lexie Walstad, and senior Leslie Ferguson. Both DeLuca and Walstad registered five-point performances. DeLuca scored three goals and had two assists. Ferguson also rounded up a hat-trick for herself, while gathering an assist for a total of four points in the game.

This game featured two goalies for Saint Leo, first was junior Erin Davis who earned seven saves in the 37 minutes of play. Second was sophomore Emma Crafton who recorded three saves in 23 minutes of play. All of Rockhurst’s goals were unassisted throughout the game. It was a successful start to the season for the Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team as they look to have a successful season in 2019.
