On March 7, Saint Leo Women’s Lacrosse had an impressive scoring performance to improve to the team’s best season start of six wins. The Green and Gold overtook Tusculum with an incredible score of 24-7. The Lions’ 24 goal game breaks the team record for goals in a game which used to be 22 set last year Feb. 25, 2017.

Saint Leo scored 14 goals in the first half and 10 in the second half by 11 different players. Head coach Caitlin Hansen stated that “the team’s main goal is to always hold the opponent to under 10, and we were able to do that again today.” Not only did the opposing team not score 10, but the Lions more than tripled their score; performances like this may make it impossible for the Saint Leo to lose.

At first, the game was close as the Lions were only up 2-1. However, Leo’s seven-goal run widened the lead  9-1. Right as the game seemed over, Tusculum’s Emily Gleason caught fire, recording a hat-trick and cutting the lead 9-4. Saint Leo responded strong and handled the remaining five minutes of the half with five goals, making the half-time score 14-4.

The second half opened with three consecutive goals, two coming from sophomore Lexie Walstad. The Pioneers scored their fifth goal a little past the 17-minute marker, however, at this point it, was too late. The Lions answered that one goal with six of their own coming from five different players. Sophomore Leslie Ferguson, sophomore Sabrina Sanacore, junior Kaylah Walstad, senior Katherine Larson, and junior Neely Regan all scored a goal during the onslaught.

Some important stats include Saint Leo setting a record for goals scored on 37 total shots. The Lions dominated at the draw control collecting 22 draw controls. Leslie Ferguson alone scored six goals and two assists making her point count 35.  Kayla Walstad scored four goals going 2-2 in free position shots. Sophomore Erin Davis picks up her sixth win in a four-save performance in 30 minutes.

The scariest part about the Lions is that they are a young team and are ready to compete. Saint Leo will showcase another home game Friday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m. hosting the Assumption College Greyhounds from Massachusetts at the turf stadium.
