Saint Leo women’s lacrosse came out with a beautiful win in a hard-fought double-overtime game. This battle was against the Seton Hill Griffins at the Saint Leo stadium. This was the Lions’ first win against Seton Hill making their overall record now 1-2.
Freshman defender Mackenzie Cotter caused a turnover with just 37 seconds left in regulation time. This gave the Lions just enough time to pick up the ball and call a time out to set up a play. Once out of the time out it was time to execute. The Lions ran their play flawlessly giving senior Leslie Ferguson the chance to score the equalizing goal making the end of regulation 13-13.
Even the first overtime wasn’t enough as both teams failed to score, pushing the game into double overtime. At the start of the second overtime, junior Ashley Salvett won the draw while getting fouled. The foul gave the Lions the perfect position they needed to set up junior Janee DeLuca’s game-winning goal, giving her 18 for the season.
This was a big game for Ferguson who became the second player in Lions’ history to reach 100 career goals. Of her six goals, the game-tying one was her milestone. One fun fact is that junior Lexie Walstad, Deluca and Ferguson have scored in every game this season so far. If they can keep it up, there will be no telling how far these lady Lions can go.
Saint Leo’s next game will be Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m., home, against Lee University. The Lions will look to take this home game staying unbeaten and improving their record to 6-0 on the season.
