Women’s Basketball Looks to Finish Season on a High Note

After losing four out of their last five games, all of which were intra-conference contests, the Lions women’s basketball team has had a rough ending to their season. Currently seeded at 9th out of 11 teams in the Sunshine State Conference, the Lions can’t be happy about their performance in the SSC this season, tallying just five wins out of 18 games so far. However, with two games left in the season, the team has a chance to jump two places in the standings and finish in a much more respectable 7th place. The Lions will take on Florida Southern on Feb. 27 at 5:30 pm in their last home game in the Bowman Center, followed by their final away contest against Barry, to be played in Miami on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 2:00 pm. Earlier this season, the team failed to best either of these two opponents, losing 60-55 and 68-34 to Barry and FSC, respectively.

Fortunately, while their performance as a team might not have turned out as well as they had hoped, several Lions have turned in outstanding individual performances over the course of the year, as well as in the last few games. Junior guard Gina Brierley has led the team in scoring over the past three games, averaging 14.3 points in those contests and 10.0 on the season. Brierley not only also leads her team in assists with 3.5 per game, but also ranks 3rd in the entire SSC in total assist (93 so far). Sophomore forward Alani Gallagher set the team high in made free throws last Wednesday against Tampa, shooting a perfect 8-8. Gallagher is also leading her team in offensive rebounding, pulling in nearly two per game. Junior guard Madelin Lang ran the offense exceptionally throughout the season, dishing out 2.3 assists per game, and leading the team in passing efficiency as well with a 1.63 assist to turnover ratio. Finally, sophomore Delaney Bernard tallied the second highest point total in the conference this year, dropping 32 and shooting a record-setting 10-12 from behind the arc against Trinity College earlier in the season.

The Lions will play their final home game of the season on Feb. 27 at 5:30 pm. Don’t forget that you can also access this game as well as all other SSC contests via live stream on your D2L account, free of charge.
