It was an exciting weekend for Saint Leo athletes, coaches, and supporters, as nearly every team of Lions that played over the weekend walked away with at least one W.
On Friday, the women’s tennis team moved their record to 2-0 after sweeping State College of Florida 7-0. This win followed their season-opening victory over Gustavo Adolphus College Thursday, where the Lions also failed to drop a match, defeating their opposition 9-0.
Notable Performance: Saint Leo’s Madeleine Gauthier had arguably the most intense match of the night. After dropping the first set 1-6, she bounced back to give her opponent a 6-0 bagel in the second. The tiebreaking third set ended in a thrilling 15-13 finish in favor of Gauthier.
On Saturday, the men’s lacrosse team defended their home turf against Lincoln Memorial, delivering a statement win with a final score of 20-6. This pushes the team’s record to 2-0 following an 18-10 win over Alabama-Huntsville last weekend.
Notable Performances: Senior Jake Gilmour became Saint Leo’s new career leader in points at 177. He delivered two goals and four assists in Saturday’s performance. Charlie Kurtenbach led the team in scoring with five goals on just twelve shot attempts.
The women’s lacrosse team was equally as successful, topping Molloy College in their season opener at home. With a final score of 18-10 after a tie game at halftime, the Lions start off the year with a commanding performance as a team.
Notable Performances: Leslie Ferguson led the Lions with confident and dominant play, finishing with six points (4 G, 2 A). Kaylah Walstad finished right behind her with five points of
her own (3G, 2 A). Delaney Chrisco scored the first goal of the season for the Lions just a couple of minutes into the game and would finish with two in the game.
The softball team dominated Young Harris in their three-game series over the weekend, failing to lose any of the contests. With the final scores being 4-0, 3-1, and 4-1 in favor of the Lions, this pushes the team’s win streak to 6 and overall record to 8-1 on the season.
Notable Performances: Pitchers Alison Mitts and Auria Mounts earned the W’s for their team over the weekend. Mitts moves to 4-0 and Mounts to 3-1 on the mound this season. At the plate, Sarah Pauscher led the Lions in RBIs with three over the course of the series.
With two wins and a loss against Lee, the baseball team moves their season record to 4-1.
Notable Performances: Pitchers Oscar Gordillo (1-0) and Drew Tumbelty (1-0) picked up the wins Saturday, while Joey Antonopoulos (0-1) took the hard-fought loss in Sunday’s contest. Peyton Isaacson and Chase Turner each walked away with a home run over the weekend.
Inside the Bowman Center, the women’s basketball team emerged victorious by seven points over Barry in their pink-out game for breast-cancer awareness. In their previous matchup in Miami over a month ago, Barry defeated the Lions by a crushing 18 points. Currently, on a three-game win streak, Saint Leo moves to 11-14 overall and 6-11 in the conference.
Notable Performances: Senior Nikira Hooks posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Star sophomore Gina Brierly did a little bit of everything, posting 11 points, four boards, four assists, and two steals.
The men’s basketball team was the only Saint Leo team that walked away from this weekend without a win. Their loss came at the hands of Barry University, who outscored the Lions by 13. The team is now 12-16 overall and 8-9 in the conference.
Notable Performances: Daniel Duarte shot an impressive 8-11 clip from the field for a total of 21 points on the night. DeAndre King gave it his best effort across the boards, as usual, notching 16 points, eight dimes, and five boards.
