On April 4, No. 1 ranked Saint Leo blanked No. 49 Rollins 9-0 at the Saint Leo Tennis center. Saint Leo played a perfect match handing Rollins the shut out. The Lions have played well all season and this match was the icing on the cake. Their hard work is paying off and it shows not only in their record, but also their rank. Coming in this week with the No. 1 rank is an honor; this rank comes with the glory of claiming to be the best team in the conference and with this match they proved it.
The Sunshine State Conference win raised the Lions’ overall record to 16-0 with a 5-0 record in the conference. Junior Thomas Grinberg and junior Vincent Suillerot were outstanding in their doubles match as the dynamic duo defeated the opposing players 8-0. The second doubles match was played by senior Jamie Bueno and freshman Willem Van Den Akker, where they cashed in on an 8-4 decision. The final doubles match was played by junior Bruno Babic and senior Francisco Aparicio where they pulled of an impressive 8-3 win.
Next on the day were the singles matches where Grinberg started things off strong cruising to an easy 6-0, 6-1 win. The second match featured Suillerot where he defeated his unranked opponent 6-3, 6-4. The third match was played by Bueno where he also won an extremely close battle 7-5, 6-7, 10-6. The fourth match Babic beat his opponent with a pair of 6-4 victories. No. 5 was played by Aparicio who won his matches 6-3, 7-5. Finally match six was when Leo shut Rollins out when a pair of 6-2 victories were delivered by Van Den Akker.
This was a perfect match for Leo which definitely proves they are deserving of the No. 1 rank right now. Up next, the Lions hit the road to face No. 12 Embry-Riddle Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m.
