On March 27, the Saint Leo baseball team took the diamond again for another double header. In two seven-inning contests, No. 24 Saint Leo baseball walked off in the eighth inning in game two to close the day with a sweep. The first game was pure dominance with a win of 6-1, while the second game was more competitive with a final score of 3-2.
During the first game, the pitching dominated as they didn’t allow a run to Wisconsin Parkside over six innings. Sophomore Joey Antonopoulos and senior Oscar Gordillo split the six innings, they combined for five strike outs and an incredible 0.00 ERA. Junior Peyton Isaacson came in during the last inning only allowing one run, his first of the season, to finish off the opposing team. Senior Lane Stancil led the offensive charge going 2-4 with one run and one RBI. In the fifth, Stancil started things off right with a double before coming in to score on a two-run double from Junior Brett Coffel. Sophomore Amir Wright also contributed to the offense in the sixth inning by hitting a double to score senior Derek Gibree and senior Tate Sweatt. Saint Leo started off slow by scoring just one run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead for the first four innings. The Lions then added two runs in the fifth and then a dominant three runs in the sixth. This powerful offense gave them a 6-0 lead by the last inning before Parkside scored one.
Game two started and it was much closer than the first. The game was low scoring and went to the end until a single from Wright scored Gibree to win the game 3-2.
The game was back and forth as the Lions scored first but the Rangers tied it in the third. Saint Leo then added another in the fourth before the Rangers tied it again in the sixth.
However, in extra innings it would be the Lions who prevailed and claimed the victory. Sophomore Blake Bodin picked up the win when he came in for relief and recorded an out without even sending the ball across the plate. Bodin came in with two outs and one runner on base in the top of the sixth and picked the runner off at first to end the inning. Freshman Jeremy Peel had a good game only letting up two runs and three hits in the four innings he pitched. Senior Tyler Bauman came in for one inning and struck out the side before senior Drew Tumbelty came in for two-thirds of an inning allowing two hits and a run. Bodin then came in to finish the game with two innings with one strike out and one hit.
The offensive player of the game goes to junior Jared Morello who went 3-4 to lead the way for the Lions. Saint Leo and the Ranger return to the diamond at Thomas B. Southard field again for their third and final game March 28.
