Saint Leo men’s lacrosse is one of the powerhouse sports on this campus. They are not only the best in the state of Florida but one of the best in the nation for their division. They had an incredible 2018 season where they posted a crazy .842-win percentage on a 16-3 record. This momentum carried them all the way to Boston, Massachusetts for the Division II National Championship. Their dream, however, came to a halt as they were defeated by Merrimack College to end their season.
The Lions learned from this and kept their heads high as they went back to work for the offseason. They look to continue their onslaught through the state of Florida to get back to the championship. However, this time they intend to take it home with them. After speaking with coach Bradley Jorgensen, it’s obvious the Lions are ready and hungry for this season.
When asked what he was looking forward to the season.
Coach Jorgensen replied, “Every year is a new challenge, and we will be going into this season with a big target on our back. I look forward to seeing our group respond to the increased challenge ahead.” It is with no doubt that after the Lions’ amazing season they are targeted by the rest of the state as they enter the new season. This target should be having teams playing much harder to take them down making it a little tougher for the Lions.
When coach was asked what he felt the greatest obstacle would be, he stated, “We will be a talented team, but will not be very experienced. We will need to learn very quickly and mature on the fly.” The Lions are a young team which means they need to gel to become a better unit. Only time can fix this, and hopefully, Saint Leo can get on the same page fast. When asked what type of impact the veteran players will bring to the team and the younger players, Jorgensen said, “We are counting on our veterans to bring the new players along and teach them how we operate. Our style of play, our team culture and our ability to be composed are all critical to our success. Our veterans are the best teachers of those pieces.”
It is no doubt that the veterans will be a big factor in gluing this team together. It sounds like with the talent they have as long as they can play as a single unit they are poised to have another big year, and possibly bring home a trophy to Saint Leo University.
