“We offer a fall and spring show each year” said Allyson Marino, Fine Arts Events Director and instructor of English for the School of Arts and Sciences. “The spring show is professionally judged awarding students in three categories of Photography, Drawing and Sculpture.”
Students participating in the show came from the Drawing, Advanced Sculpture, and Beginning and Intermediate Photography classes.
“The best thing about art here at Saint Leo is that it’s a breeding ground for creativity and that is what I like to encourage most, is creativity” said Trisha Toms, Associate Professor of Art.
James Hughson, Associate Professor of Photography said “I think they were more conservative with their work than last show.”
Awarded first place this year were Christina Castro (Photography), Emily Sheputis (Drawing), and Victoria Reece (Sculpture). The Best in Show Award went to Lynn Altman for her sculpture made from found art.
The Show was delightfully entertaining set in the small space at Saint Edwards Hall, with musical entertainment provided by the New Moon String Ensemble, directed by Kasia Dolinska, violinist with the Florida Orchestra. Also performing was the female A Capella group S.A.S.S. directed by Ms. Pamela Decius.
A very well attended event with Dr. Mary Spoto, Dean of the College of Arts and Science, Dr. Kurt Wilt Chair of the Department of English, Fine Arts & Humanities, as well as Saint Leo University President Dr. Arthur F. Kirk, Jr in the crowd.
Creativity is alive and well at Saint Leo University. Art shows twice a year and several music and dramatic productions per year, there is only the possibility for growth at Saint Leo. The Saint Leo community can be proud of the representation done by the art students this spring and should look forward to even more as the years pass.
While all of the arts are only a minor currently at Saint Leo University the community can, and should, look forward to its growth and development for art is the expression of intellect on a physical, visceral and emotional level that should always be encouraged, developed and applauded.
