Travelling is such an amazing and exciting experience, but sitting on those long flights can be boring, and you can feel like you’re sitting in the same place forever.
However, while you are sitting for a couple of hours, watching a good movie can fill the time and provide you with great entertainment during the wait to arrive at your destination.
There are endless choices of movies, but choosing a movie that relates to your trip makes everything more exciting. Whether it is a beach vacation, a cozy Christmas cabin, a trip to Europe with your girls, or even going home after being away at college, it’s important to choose a movie that is going to make the plane ride part of your trip experience as well. Therefore, here is a guide to the best movies to watch on a plane and why.
- Mamma Mia 2008
A classic musical that is fun, exciting, and a great movie to watch to make the flight fly by is Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia takes place in Greece, with a mother named Donna working at her hotel, which she built when she was in her early 20s. The story follows her 20-year-old daughter, Sophie, who is getting married but is trying to answer the never-ending question of who her dad is. She invites three perspectives to her wedding with the intention of finding him without her mom knowing. This movie is a musical, so it has amazing songs. It is a comedy with heartfelt moments. Considering it takes place in the beautiful country of Greece, this is a great movie to watch if you are going to a beachy area or heading on a new adventure! A lot of us college students are Sophie’s age, so it’s a cute movie to watch as we go on our own adventures as 20-year-olds.
- Titanic 1997
Although Titanic is a tragedy, the movie turns into a love story that we follow as the boat is sinking. This movie is an adventure as it starts out with two totally different people finding each other on the boat. We meet the character Rose, who is a young girl about to get married to a rich man she doesn’t really know. She craves freedom and adventure but finds herself locked in a world that she doesn’t belong in. The boy she meets is namedJack. He is a kind gentleman who comes from nothing. He travels the world and lives each day to the fullest. As the unfortunate event of the Titanic takes place, we see Rose and Jack’s story and how it unfolds. This movie is three hours long and will leave you both crying and smiling before your expected arrival.
- The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2005
This iconic 2000s movie with popular actors such as Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Amber Tamblyn is perfect for a plane ride. This movie is about four girls who are all about to leave for summer and want to have something that keeps them close to one another and to remind them of their individual adventures. This is why they created the idea of sharing one “magic” pair of pants that fits them all. The idea is for them to take turns wearing the pair of jeans the whole summer and mail them back to one another. All the girls travel to different places like Greece, Mexico, South Carolina, and Maryland. It’s a sweet movie and gets you excited about your travelling plans as you’re on the plane.
- The Map that leads to you 2025
This movie is perfect for a plane ride. As you’re travelling through the sky, you can watch recent college grads Heather, Connie, and Amy travel through Europe for two weeks. They all have completely different personalities, and Heather, the one who needs a schedule for everything, meets Jack, who is living one day at a time, following his grandfather’s journal on what to see in the world. The movie is full of adventure and loveand has a shocking twist to it.
- Anyone but you 2023
Anyone But You is a Rom Com. It features both romance and comedy. The two main characters are Bea and Ben who find each other in the beginning of the movie and have the best date of their lives. Due to unexpected misunderstandings, they grew to hate one another. Later, Bea’s sister is getting married to Ben’s best friend, and they both have toattend the wedding, which takes place in Australia. We meet different characters, watch how Bea and Ben turn hate into love, and laugh at the humor that comes with it. This is a good movie to watch on a plane because it features a plane ride and a trip to the beautiful Australia. It has all the elements of one of the best rom-coms, and you won’t be bored on your long flight.
- Home Alone 1990
This classic Christmas movie, Home Alone, is perfect if you’re headed on a family trip to a winter holiday destination or going home for the holidays. This movie is pure chaos and features a family who is going away to Paris with a combined family of fifteen. One of the kids, Kevin, ends up being left behind at home and on a journey of his own, fighting burglars attempting to rob his house while also making his own rules as an eight-year-old. This movie also features how crazy it is at the airport during the holidays and incorporates travelling stress, but also warm family love.

If you’re that person who gets bored on a flight and never knows what to watch, now you have good options to entertain yourself during this time. If you watch one or two of these movies, depending on your destination, it will make the time fly by, and you won’t regret the magical experience these films will leave you with and the excitement they will evoke in you for the adventure you’re about to have.
