A College Student’s Guide to the Premium Dorm Room Food

With only five weeks left of college, the workload is ever surmounting and as time slowly but surely creeps by Saint Leo students will find little enough time to balance academics never mind the little necessities which make up everyday life. Cooking in college presents a challenge to even the smartest students especially due to the fact that for the most part students just simply can’t be bothered cooking a healthy, nutritious meal after a hard days grafting in the classroom. For those of you who have meal plans within the cafeteria, this article is still of predominant relevance as realistically speaking what student doesn’t get sick of the cafeteria/ Lion’s Lair food at times? Thanks to various student and cafeteria employee input, this article contains ideas and recipes in which can quickly and cheaply transform a lackluster meal or snack option into something much more exciting and delicious.  

Beginning with some of the breakfast ideas discussed, the main thing is to forget the traditional bowl of cereal every once and a while. It may seem that it’s the quickest and most convenient option but going for the wheat alternative of bread is just as handy. For example bagels with cream cheese, sliced tomatoes, and fresh orange juice create a quick and energizing meal. In the same sense if you don’t have a lot of time or even supplies (like eggs, milk, and flour) don’t fret it’s not mission impossible just grab a container of Bisquick Shake ‘n Pour, add water, pour into a frying pan, and you have your product of hot, steamy pancakes! Don’t forget to bring the syrup. The final breakfast idea is that of blueberry pancakes in disguise. Krusteaz makes a decent and usually low-priced Wild Blueberry Muffin Mix, which, thanks to a recipe on the back of the carton, it can quickly be turned into blueberry pancakes.
 

With regards to lunch and dinner ideas, macaroni and cheese is always a winner. With multiple, easy-to-make options available, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a dish of mac & cheese now and then. Velveeta and Kraft offer timeless favorites you can make yourself, or you can opt for frozen options if you have access to an oven or microwave. When speaking to students across campus it was definitely homemade meals which were missed the most however ravioli, which can come pre-made in any freezer or refrigerated section of a grocery store, combined with a jar of tomato sauce and grated parmesan cheese is the next best fix. Other options are grilled cheese with tomato and basil soup and also homemade quesadillas which are just a matter of grabbing some tortillas and shredded cheese, and popping them in the microwave.

Finally a quick and easy dessert to rumble up in the dorm room is that of midnight snack pre mixed brownies and vanilla ice cream which is perfect for when it’s late and you’re tired, but need a sugar rush in order to finish up that last leg of homework.
