On Dec. 3, 2021 at 5:30 p.m., an event titled “Uniquely You” was hosted by Saint Leo University’s Campus Activities Board (CAB). This event was centered around the idea of self-expression and provided Saint Leo students with a safe space to display their talents. The organizer, Damion Drackett, a sophomore majoring in bio-medical health sciences, said that he hosted the event to educate students on the ways they can express themselves.

“I hosted this event because for starters, I want everyone here on this campus to understand that there are numerous ways to express themselves,” he said.

Throughout this self-reflective program, students gathered to voice out what they believe self-expression is, share their unique talents, and engage in meditation activities. Performances were given by talented poets and writers like Mariana Navarrete, a senior majoring in global studies with a minor in psychology.

Similarly, songs were beautifully sung by gifted individuals like Ashley Griffith, a junior majoring in international hospitality management, and Maria Sanchez, a sophomore majoring in business management with a minor in marketing. The presentation given by Navarrete was dedicated to her home country, Mexico, and centered around what it is like being away from her land of origin.

The songs and dances vocalized and performed by the other participants were also conducted to show that there are numerous ways for people to express themselves, whether that be through poetry, dancing, or singing.

Although Drackett played the background during the planning of the event showcasing self-expression, he did not hesitate to participate and unveil his own. During a segment, Drackett revealed that he had an admiration for photography and videography and revealed that it was his personal way of self-expression He reminded everyone of the importance of loving one’s talents and the things that make them uniquely themselves.

“Understanding your methods of self-expression is truly important and it highlights the exclusivity and creativity that each person has,” said Drackett. “I believe that all students should tap into their talents and learn to express themselves before taking on the work field.”

Finally, as the occasion came to an end, all attendees were allowed to share what they believe makes them unique and what is their most significant inspiration. Uniquely You, sponsored by CAB, was definitely a positive and essential event held here at Saint Leo!
