Since 1918, the United States, along with many other countries, has honored those who have served in multiple wars, particularly World War One. Veteran’s Day originated as “Armistice Day, ” and in 1938 it became a national holiday in the United States. The important day is honored on the Saint Leo campus as well.
Veterans’ Day is typically celebrated on Nov. 11 because it is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the World War One, which lasted from 1914 to 1918 and was one of the most devastating wars in history. Celebrations were first focused on veterans who served in the First World War but in 1954, the day was changed to celebrate those who served in all wars.
On Veterans’ Day in the United States, veterans who served are celebrated for their service and sacrifice. Saint Leo, being a very military friendly campus, has celebrations for these veterans yearly and also provides various services for these veterans, including student veterans.
The Office of Military Affairs and Services very frequently hosts events in support and celebration of former troops, such as the Sock collection event that took place on Sep. 29 to Oct. 1. The idea behind the sock drive was to assist veterans in need and supply them with necessary day to day items
. In addition to this sock drive, the office sponsored an event titled “Operation Stand Down,” a community event hosted at Veterans Memorial Park in Hudson, FL that provided counseling services, haircuts, and career services for veterans.
On Nov. 4, the Office of Military Affairs and Services sponsored a Military Recognition Event at the Bowl on the University campus. This event featured speakers, various booths which
provided information for veterans on counseling services and career sourcing and provided a safe and welcoming place for veterans to commune.
John Morgan, president of the Student Veterans Association and a student veteran himself, commented on his experience in the military and how important it is to have support for veterans and celebrations on Veterans Day.
“Being able to serve my country is such an honor and privilege. This is the best country in the world; I am truly blessed to be an American. I attend events such as these to honor my fellow veterans and to continue the brotherhood we had when we were serving” expressed Morgan.
The Saint Leo community will be having their annual Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 A.M. on the loggia of the school of business building. The ceremony will include guest speaker Danny Burges, a Florida Representative, and will be followed by a reception. There will be an adjusted schedule for students and faculty wishing to attend this event.
