Imagine this scene: the night is dark, firelight flickers over the lake, and the sound of footsteps and students’ laughter fills the air. In moments like these, the campus stops being just a place of study and becomes a space of connection, shared memories, and true unity.
This was the atmosphere that prevailed at Saint Leo University on Jan. 27 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., one of the most anticipated events for athletes.
The Spring Pep Rally & Bonfire, organized by the Spirit Committee with Athletics, took place near the lakefront access by the little bridge. Students gathered to start the evening together. The participants met at the Student Community Center at Lakeside Patio, then walked down together toward the lake, immediately feeling a sense of community.

For the athletes, this was an opportunity to feel support outside of training and competitions. The music set the rhythm, and free hot chocolate and glow sticks created a cozy and festive atmosphere.
The Saint Leo Spirit Team performed energetic dance routines throughout the evening, lifting the crowd’s spirits and adding even more excitement to the event. Their performances not only entertained students but also helped unify everyone, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
One of the main goals of the Spring Pep Rally & Bonfire was to create a space for informal communication and to strengthen a sense of belonging to the Saint Leo community outside theclassroom.
“I think today’s bonfire was bringing students together outside of classes and daily routines,” said Deren Ozel, a sophomore majoring in Marketing.
“Being in the same space, talking, laughing, and sharing the experience helps everyone feel more connected to the school community,” added Ozel.
For many students, school spirit manifests not only in supporting sports teams but also in shared moments that create a sense of community.

“School spirit means feeling proud to be part of my university and enjoying the sense of community it offers,” said Ozel.
Such events strengthen the university’s identity and leave students with memories that shape their overall perception of campus life.
“When I attended the event, I immediately felt the energy. The laughter and conversations filled the space, and the large number of people made the atmosphere feel even more festive,” said Yulissa Barrios, a junior majoring in Marketing.
“I believe that such events bring together the athletes, further strengthening team spirit,” added Barrios.
The central symbol of the evening was the bonfire, which was so large it could be seen from afar. Groups of friends and new acquaintances of athletes gathered around it. It created an atmosphere of comfort and security, reminding students that the university is a place where they can feel at home.
The Spring Pep Rally & Bonfire showed how important such events are for campus life. They help students take their minds off their routine, strengthen bonds, and create a shared sense of pride in their university.
As a result, the evening by the lake became not just entertainment, but a reminder of the community’s role in student life.
