On Feb. 14, the Student Government Union and Campus Activities Board sponsored a special Valentine’s Day event, Wax Dipped Flowers. The activity was held on the side of Saint Jude Chapel from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
According to Morgan Wagner, vice president of activities, the wax dipped flower event was a major part of Love Leo Week. This second annual event was “placed on valentine’s day on purpose” and was a big hit with the students.
“The meaning of the wax dipped flower is to give the flower away to a special person either in a romantic way or just for a friendship,” stated Wagner.
Michelle Feigenbaum, an artist from Kirkland Productions, felt that the wax dipped flowers were “an ideal event for valentine’s day for the students at Saint Leo University.” According to Feigenbaum, there were two-hundred flowers used for the event, both roses and carnations. With the wax, flowers last longer and they also stay fresh for up to five to ten days.
“The red roses and red carnations were running out at the event,” said Feigenbaum. “The wax dipped flowers was the perfect event, and super popular.”
This was Feigenbaum’s first time being involved with this event. She came to Tampa a few days before the event because she “had to get the flowers couple days early, and had to take care of them.
“It is extremely important for the flowers to stay fresh and healthy, thus I trimmed the flowers every 24 hours after receiving them and babied them for two days with plant food,” Feigenbaum explained.
The wax dipping process was a careful one. Helped students Feigenbaum explained that “the wax must not be supper hot. Gently dip the flower in the wax; it is a soft, twist and turn movement.” She also mentioned the importance of keeping the flowers in a cool area to keep them healthy.
Alexandra Mattocks, a junior biomedical major, decided to attend this event because her best friend brought her.
“This is my first time attending this event, and I am looking forward for the next one,” stated Mattocks.
Brandy Russell, a junior a biomedical major, was attracted to the event because she loves flowers. Russell later stated that her “Valentine’s Day was beautiful.”
Feigenbaum thought that the event went well and that Morgan Wagner was very helpful and the students were “super friendly.”
