There are also ways on campus that Saint Leo is helping the issue. There are recycling bins stationed around campus, as well as students taking matters into their own hands. One SLU student encourages people to give her their used plastic bags, as she creates crafts out of them.
Katie Huettel, sophomore elementary education major, creates purses, wallets, mats, and large
bags from the plastic bags she receives.
“I already crocheted before, but when I heard about how plastic bags were ‘junking’ up the
world, I decided I could use them to crochet them,” said Huettel.
Last year, Huettel made mats out of plastic bags for people who are homeless, with them also being able to use them as blankets.
“My friend was doing a project for her girl scout award, and I decided to help her out,” said Huettel.
Huettel adds, “A Nigerian missionary introduced me to the idea, and ever since then I have enjoyed doing it. Also, I found a way to cut the bags in a specific way, so that I use every part of it, leaving no scraps to throw away.”
Huettel encourages all students and faculty to drop off any unwanted plastic bags and/or magazines to Kirk Hall, room 120 or 121, located near the CAVE.
