As students face the pressures of academics, midterms, and extracurricular activities, stress can quickly become a common companion.

However, a recent event at our school on Thursday, Oct. 3, aimed to lighten the load, bringing furry friends to campus for a delightful event, “PAWS Your Stress.” This event not only offered students a chance to unwind but also provided insights into the therapeutic benefits of animal interaction.

Katelyn Guilamo, a senior majoring in elementary education, shared her experience at the event.

“The dogs made me stop and take a breather, which was refreshing from a busy and stressful day,” she remarked.

For Katelyn, spending time with the dogs was more than just a momentary escape; it reshaped her perspective on stress management. Katelyn’s sentiments echo a wider understanding of the mental health benefits that animals can bring, especially in high-pressure environments.

“Having the dogs around made me feel more comforted and reminded me of home,” she added, showcasing how these furry companions can evoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth amid chaos.

Makayla Bech, a senior majoring in English, also shared her thoughts on the event. She expressed her enthusiasm for similar initiatives.

“This experience will help me find different outlets for my stress rather than just worrying and stressing all day,” Bech said.

Bech felt that the event highlighted how the school and community support students’ well-being during challenging times.

“I felt relaxed and happy. It helped me take my mind off things and eased the difficulty of being away from my dog while I’m at school.” Makayla concluded by emphasizing the comforting presence of animals, sharing that “Paws Your Stress” served as a poignant reminder of the power of connection—both human and animal.

The impact of dogs on students was palpable. The relationship between humans and canines is truly impactful, Janna, a handler for Paws for Friendship, observed.

“They just get happy and calm down. They are called man’s best friend for a reason,” said Janna.

Janna emphasized the preparation that goes into bringing the dogs to such events.

“It is mainly their personality, and they love the attention,” she explained, noting how the dogs are naturally inclined to engage with people. This affinity for companionship becomes evident as the dogs interact with students, fostering an atmosphere of joy and relaxation.

Stress relief can be as small as something that can fit on your lap! This statement resonates with many students who seek solace in the presence of animals, demonstrating the immediate changes in mood and stress levels that can occur in their company.

However, handling dogs in such an energetic environment comes with its own challenges.

“Tucker, the dog, definitely gets excited and likes to be in everyone’s face,” Janna noted, acknowledging the varying temperaments of different dogs. Some may be laid-back, while others thrive on the excitement of interaction, underscoring the unique personality that each dog brings to the table.

As students navigate the stresses of school life, these moments of joy, comfort, and companionship can offer invaluable relief. The event exemplified the need for more similar initiatives, inviting people to explore the healing power of our four-legged friends.

With their wagging tails and gentle nudges, these dogs may just be the best stress-relief tool students didn’t know they needed.
