Spending time in nature is a great way to escape the stress of college life. Saint Leo University’s University Ministry offered their annual kayaking trip to the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park on Sept. 15, giving students a chance to explore the great outdoors that Florida has to offer.

Homosassa, Fla. is known for its springs and wildlife, with many encounters on the water, such as fish that can easily be seen in the shallows, and even manatees. There is also an area in the springs called Monkey Island, where spider monkeys can relax while boaters pass by.

Brennan Roohan, a junior majoring in marketing, expressed the joy felt during the trip.

Roohan stated, “My favorite part was getting to the shallow parts of the river to swim, relax, and goof around with friends.”

There were many opportunities to enjoy other water activities besides swimming, like rope swinging, and, of course, kayaking. Many students thought it was fun jumping off a nearby tree into the water.

“Kayaking is a great exercise that doesn’t feel like you are at the gym,” said Roohan. “It is a great way to work out those arm muscles while enjoying God’s creation.”

Exploring the waters of Homosassa Springs was not only an experience to connect with God’s nature, but also a healthy way to connect with other students in University Ministry.

“My initial expectations of the trip were great, expecting to simply kayak and have a good time. However, it exceeded my expectations. It was an opportunity to grow a relationship with my friends,” expressed Roohan.

The University Ministry’s main goal of this trip was to help students take time away from all the homework and exams, and to enjoy God’s gift of nature and the friendships that come with it. They hope that next year, more students can relax and enjoy the benefits of being outside in nature.
