Having stage fright while performing in front of an audience is a nerve-racking experience for many people. But what if there were a space where singing could happen without pressure or judgment from others? At Saint Leo University, students have this opportunity to showcase their talents, overcome their fears, and simply challenge themselves by trying something new.

With the start of the spring semester, a new tradition began at the university. Karaoke & Open Mic takes place every Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., giving anyone interested the chance to take the microphone and showcase their talents in front of an audience.

This event takes place on the patio of the Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library and is led by organizers Joe Gerrior, who previously worked as a chef in the Dining Hall and now volunteers, and Janet Franks, an adjunct librarian at Saint Leo.

Registration for Karaoke & Open Mic starts at 1:30 p.m., and anyone can sing their favorite song or practice speaking on stage in front of an audience. The purpose of this event is to create a space for creativity and fun.

“Sometimes we hold Karaoke & Open Mic at the Dining Hall so that students can learn about our event, and that we are happy to see them near the library every Sunday,” said Franks.

One of the key features of the event is its welcoming atmosphere, free from expectations or judgment. It is a space where students are not criticized; instead, they are encouraged and supported as they explore and develop their talents.

“This event is for fun. Students should not be afraid to sing here, because we do not push them,” said Franks.

“It just takes time for people to feel comfortable,” said Gerrior.

For some students, this event is a chance to express themselves and their talents by providing a place to practice their passions.

“I like to sing, but I cannot sing loudly in the dorm because I do not want to bother other people. Here I can,” said Sylvia Peabody, a senior majoring in Accounting.

This event is a completely new experience for students, opening opportunities for self-expression and creative growth. Although not everyone knows about the Sunday tradition of live performances, bright posters have been posted all over the campus inviting them to take part in Karaoke & Open Mic and try it for themselves by stepping on the stage.

“I know about this event from the cafeteria, but I have also seen a poster about this event in my dorm,” said Peabody.

Sunday meetings at the library become not just an entertainment event, but a platform for personal growth and the disclosure of creative potential. In a warm and relaxed atmosphere, everyone can take a step towards their talents and feel like a part of the university community.
