Saint Leo University’s School of Arts and Sciences is honoring the free spirit of the 1960’s with the yearlong theme “REVOLUTION!: Saint Leo Remembers the 60s.” This theme was kicked off with the Flower Power campaign event held outside of the cafeteria from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

For this event, faculty and student volunteers channeled their inner flower child and dressed in 1960s attire to greet students entering the cafeteria lobby with flowers and positive messages. In addition to the flowers, Megan Orendorf, the administrator of events and special programs for the School of Arts and Sciences, manned a colorful ’60s themed display table where students could acquire themed giveaways such as tie-dyed bags, buttons, beads and temporary tattoos.

Many students, including Vincent Tonnerre, we’re excited to use Flower Power to advertise peace and love throughout campus. Tonnerre spoke about how handing out flowers was a way to “spread love and respect across the community and amongst friends throughout Saint Leo.”

The 1960s theme will not only be present in events such as the Flower Power campaign but will also be included in the class coursework. This decade was specifically chosen because “it’s a tumultuous decade with civil rights going on, the space race, and the hippie counterculture movement,” explained Orendorf. “Lots of different things in music innovation all represent a really great decade to feature and run throughout all of our classes.”

This exciting event was only the beginning of the fun activities that the School of Arts and Sciences has planned for the “REVOLUTION!: Saint Leo Remembers the 60s”  theme. The School of Arts and Sciences has several upcoming themed events, including 60s themed movies and free popcorn at 7:00 PM every Monday night in Selby Auditorium.
