At 6 p.m. Jan. 30, the Accounting Club hosted their annual “Dress for Success” event in Teco Hall.

The organization has continuously been hosting the informational for about 10 years; this year, they decided to partner with the Debate Club, the National Society of Minorities of Hospitality (NSMH) and the Caribbean Student Association (CSA).

“I started conducting this event because when I arrived at Saint Leo, I noticed some students did not know how to dress for their interviews and for their future jobs,” expressed Dr. Passard Dean, professor of accounting and finance and faculty advisor of the Accounting Club.

“People connect money and attire with success, but you do not have to spend a lot of money to look good,” expressed Dean, as he wrapped up his presentation. Credit: Rebecca Hugh

The Accounting Club served its attendees some helpful advice, complemented by Domino’s Pizza and a cup of either Pepsi, Pink Lemonade or Orange Fanta with the education on how to better prepare for interviews by dressing appropriately, and how to dress for the jobs they will have in the future.

The presentation was broken up into three main sections: dressing for interviews, dressing on the job and dressing for a promotion.

“We decided to be partners on this event because I believe apart of having good business skills is also knowing how to dress appropriately. Just last week, we were conducting our own resume and interview workshop, and with that plus the event today it will allow club members to build on their business skills. Also, the timing of the event was great because as an organization we are gearing up for our annual conference where members will be conducting interviews and networking with industry professionals,” said Zachery Roberson, senior, political science major and president of NSMH.

Dean had his audience’s attention while expressing a plethora of dress code tips. With his comical expressions and experienced advice, many of the students were fully engaged and were asking meaningful questions.

In between PowerPoint slides, students were able to win one of the 15 raffle prizes. Students who won a gift bag were given various items which included Saint Leo cups, highlighters, pens, pencils, calculators, staplers, lanyards and Snickers bars.

Some of the advice given for interviews included researching the company culture before the interview and remembering that it is better to impress by overdressing. Ensuring one is wearing clothing that fits (for men: suits should be tailored, for women: skirts should be knee-length and not too tight), wearing clean and pressed clothing, and always erring on the side of professional attire was also advised.
