Saint Leo is a university that is striving to become more known throughout the state of Florida, the United States, and even the world itself. With the Donald R. Tapia School of business building going up last semester, the University really showed that it could finish construction projects expediently. With the new dormitory building going up right now in rapid fashion to attract more students, along with the new school of business, the parking problem has yet to be resolved. For a number of years now, parking has been a big and growing problem for the Saint Leo’s faculty, on-campus students, and most notably, commuter students.
To try and fix this recurring problem, Saint Leo University has decided to build a new parking garage where the old soccer field used to be. With the temporary lacrosse/soccer field being where the old intramural fields were, there has been a lot of time to build a new field on the top of the new parking garage which will be under the field.
Construction for the new field started when the soccer season ended last semester. Moving at a rapid pace, the ground has already been laid out and metal wall wiring has been put up. Although there is a lot of positives coming from building the new garage, a new problem has arisen. This problem lies with the school and construction companies who need to get their trucks in and start working before students come onto campus, this is necessary to avoid congestion on an already small campus.
With construction starting sometimes as early as 5:30 a.m., students in Benoit, Henderson, Alumni, and Roderick halls have been complaining about the early morning noise. “I have been woken up at 5:30 in the morning on some days and it’s terrible how loud the construction is”, sophomore and Roderick hall resident, Bobby Cote, said earlier in the week. Although it is great they get started early in the morning and on weekends to ensure a speedy completion, waking up students early in the morning is against noise ordinances for Saint Leo.
