On Sept. 10, the English department hosted an English Majors Reception, held in the conference room of Saint Edward’s Hall, where students gathered to discuss fall semester goals and summer achievements amongst other English majors.

As conversation between students and faculty flowed, Dr. Kathryn Duncan, a Professor of English, famous brownies were served.

Gianna Russo, Associate Professor of English, who created this event last year, decided amongst her colleagues to continue with the event as it’s a great opportunity to get to know fellow classmates and professors.

Students were able to hear what the English major has to offer and were encouraged to utilize Saint Leo University’s core value of community by talking to peers and professors. This event allowed students to see the potential in pursuing English and learn about the available tools and opportunities on campus this semester.

Upcoming classes, like Studies in Speculative Fiction and Reading the Planet: ComparativeLiteratures in Translation, were promoted within the event as well as other writing opportunities. This includes the 2025-2026 issue of Sandhill Review, Saint Leo University’s official literary magazine. Submissions are open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni from Sept. 15th through Nov. 15th.

Amanda Weatherington, a junior majoring in religious studies and minoring in English, attended the event because she “took two really incredible classes” and wanted to “reunite with some of them (classmates) and see how they are all doing.”

Weatherington also stated that she enjoyed the reception and would go again if she had the chance.

The English department will host other events throughout the semester to engage with all interested students.
