Collecting Long Sleeves

A statement written in bold black letters, “Long Sleeves shirts for Migrant Workers,” was attached to a table outside of the Student Community Center.

On Nov. 8 and 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Imago Dei  – meaning “image of God” in Latin- took turns sitting behind a table with a box and collecting any long sleeve shirts that students and faculty may not need or use anymore.

Imago Dei may not be the largest Student Government Union recognized group on campus, but the issues they focus on are no small matters.

“We are a pro-life group, but we do not just focus on abortion,” Senior Bridget Plimley said. “We also focus on the death penalty, the elderly, and pretty much any human rights and human dignity issue. So we are all about making sure people have their dignity and are kept safe.”

Other members agreed and expanded on the clubs main issues.

“We’re basically focused on pro-life issues, not just abortion, but any situation where the sanctity of human life is compromised,” Sophomore Club President Zach Brasseur said. “We work to raise awareness of those issues and fight them.”
The club holds meetings the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month at 8 p.m. in the University Ministry Office located in De Chantal Hall. They have big plans for next semester according to the club’s president, and everyone is more than welcome to get involved.

“We are going to The March for Life next semester in Washington D.C. and we are also going to try to bring in a speaker who was a death row chaplain to talk about capital punishment,” Brasseur said.

What may look to be a small project is a huge step towards fulfilling one of Saint Leo University’s six core values: Community.
