On Mar. 7, IMA Student Chapter, Caribbean Student Association, The Debate Club, American Marketing Association and the Hospitality organization hosted “Dress for Success,” an educational event showcasing the proper attire for a future career. The free event started at 5:30 p.m. in TECO Hall.

According to Dr. Passard Dean, IMA’s Committee on Academic Relations and Professor of Accounting & Finance, the purpose of having “Dress for Success” is to “help students learn to dress for various important situations, such as interviews, promotions, on their jobs.”

This event demonstrated how males and females should dress for interviews, dress on the job, dress for a promotion, dress as business casual, and also provided helpful tips on grooming oneself.

“Many students do not learn this important skill in their classes,” Dean added.

Alejandro Ariza, a junior accounting major and one of the event’s hosts, found lots of helpful information from previous “Dress for Success” events.

“Last year I attended the even during my sophomore year and I left with valuable information that I was able to use,” said Ariza. “When I heard that the event was being hosted again this year, it was a no brainer that I attended again.”

Cynnique Johnson, a junior biomedical and health science major, heard about the event from The Caribbean Student Association Meetings.

“I feel as if this event was a learning experience which helped in a business aspect,” Johnson said. “Stories of personal experiences with dress codes in the workplace and on interviews made the information credible and reassuring.”

Dr. Dean, Ariza, and the event’s other participants found “Dress for Success” to be a success.

“Many students attended and asked imperative questions,” said Dean. “I’m looking forward to participation by more organizations on campus for events like this.”

“I think that it is one of the most useful workshops held on the university campus every year,” Ariza expressed. “The event turned out to be a huge success, and I know that the students in the audience were able to take something away from the workshop.”

For those looking to get involved, the IMA Student Chapter holds meetings every Wednesday. These meetings will resume next semester and address such topics as interview skills and resume building.
