The heartwarming tale of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless returns for its sixth and final season of the series “DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge” that bridges the five-year gap between “How to Train Your Dragon” and its sequel “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”
Last season, fans of the series found out that the main villain of the entire series was Trader Johann (who had hired Krogan and Viggo to obtain the lens that would lead them to the King of Dragons). Fans also discovered that Heather (Mae Whitman) and Dagur’s (David Faustino) father, Oswald, the late chief of the Berserkers had died and had lived out the rest of his life on the island of Vanaheim, a sacred ground where dragons live out their final days.
This season the Riders find out that Trader Johan has been plotting and spying on them for years. This discovery angers Hiccup’s father Stoick (Nolan North) who has trusted Trader Johan for years. In the ensuing chaos, the island is attacked, and the Riders must build an alliance between the Defenders of the Wing, Wingmaidens, Berk, and the Riders of the Edge to race against the Hunters in the search for lenses that will lead them to the King of Dragons.
The “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise has always emphasized plot and character development. These developments have been shown many times within each season of their shows, and it is exciting to see how the creators have planned to wrap up each of their character’s stories. Fans have enjoyed watching their favorite couple Hiccup and Astrid (America Ferrera), advance their relationship each season and seeing how it changed the Riders’ group dynamic.
However, within every show, there are always some inconsistencies that occur when a company decides to create something based on the original and “DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge” is no exception. One of these inconsistencies is the relationship between Heather (Mae Whitman) and Fishlegs (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) that was built upon several seasons of the show and then was flushed down the drain when the show had to keep its progression toward the sequel of the original movie. The show wasted a lot of effort on having Fishlegs and Heather develop a relationship when they should have put more effort into developing the relationship between Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Snotlout (Zack Pearlman) as they do end up trying to court Ruffnut at the very beginning of “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”
Despite all of the plot holes within the show, it concluded quite well in its attempt to wrap up loose ends. The third film in the franchise is set to be released March of 2019.
