In a world where two nations continuously wage war against each other, a man and woman stride to bring peace to their broken states.
The “Record of Gancrest War” was adapted into an anime from a manga that was adapted from a light novel which was written by Ryo Mizuno and illustrated by Miyū. The novel sold over 10 million copies in Japan. The manga adaptation is by Makoto Yotsuba and was published in the magazine “Young Animal.”
In the world which Siluca Meletes (Akari Kito) and Theo Cornaro (Kentarou Kumagai) reside, chaos has caused mass destruction and millions of deaths. Their only defense against such horrors are crests that suppress the energy around them and mages who utilize seals like crests to combat these threats. These two heroes form a contract with one another to bring peace to the terror.
The magic effects in the show look beautiful and allow for natural transitions between scenes. They interestingly used the opening of the show to explain the conflict within their world, which added a lot of color and history to the characters within the show because it established their failures and shortcomings as well as the strengths that the protagonists bared in one very short episode. Hopefully, the show will expand on what was briefly revealed in its beginning.
While the magic was done well, the fight sequence was unfortunately not. The sequence did not focus enough on the characters’ actions because most of the shots were of the characters’ faces. The audience could not understand what the characters were doing, which makes it difficult for them to feel engaged. Therefore, many viewers will likely discontinue watching the show.
All in all, the idea of this world being ruled and protected by crest-holders and magicians is interesting because it explores the values and morality of the characters. Hopefully, the animators will impress with this story.
