On Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, a new round of well-loved movies and television shows will win more accolades at the Primetime Emmy Awards.
However, “the first Emmy Awards were held on Jan. 25, 1949, at the Hollywood Athletic Club, and honored local Los Angeles-based television”, says Andrea Van Honk from the International Documentary Association.
The Emmy Award nominations are given out by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the ceremony is held in Los Angeles, California.
“The Emmys recognize excellence within various areas of television and emerging media,” says the Television Academy.
Emmy nominations are only given to the best of the best. One of the interesting rules is that only people within the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences can vote for the winners.
People can only vote within their category, making the selection of a winner easier to find because the options are not as broad. This makes the Emmys less of a popularity contest and only makes room for the truly spectacular media to shine.
Furthermore, the history behind the Emmys is more complicated than people realize. There are three different Emmy organizations, and each organization has its categories to win awards.
The three different organizations are the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (IATAS).
What separates these organizations are where they are located and what specific award nominations they hand out. NATAS is in New York and is the Daytime Emmys, ATAS is in California and is the Primetime Emmys, and IATAS is for international cinema.
This year, two of the top nominees for an Emmy Award are the television shows Succession and Squid Game. Another show that has 11 nominations is Only Murders in the Building.
Each television show and/or movie can have many different nominations based on actors, actresses, writers, and more. It just depends on what the critics say and what people vote for.
The Emmy Awards are being aired on NBC live at 8 pm Eastern Standard Time. It can be watched on Peacock, Paramount+, Roku, and more streaming services that offer live TV. Be sure to watch and see who wins!
