Life has its ups and downs, but no matter what, we should always make the best of it. If we do not go through trials and tribulations, we might never understand the true value of our blessings. Every year that goes by, things may not always go as planned, and some are better than others.

Overcoming your toughest battles is what truly determines whether you can handle what God has in store. We asked students at Saint Leo University what things they learned in 2022 and what things they wanted to bring into the new year.

Mya Sastre, a freshman studying business management, described the past year for herself- 2022 was filled with enjoyment, family, and friends. However, she did learn some lessons.

“A lesson I learned that I intend to bring over into the new year is to always be aware of your friendship circle,” said Sastre. “In other words, you should know the difference between acquaintances and close friends that you confide in.”

Another lesson she also experienced last year was to stay focused and always put yourself first in any situation.

Some students felt like 2022 brought them great career success but are ready to grow spiritually and mentally in 2023.

Bria Scavella, a senior studying psychology, described 2022 and then expressed what her goals are for 2023.

“I was able to accomplish some personal goals as well as obtain a job at Saint Leo’s bookstore,” said Scavella. “Before this, I was unemployed and no hobbies besides just being a regular half-time student.”

She mentioned that she grew a lot in 2022 but is looking toward the future, especially when it comes to her mental health and spirituality.

“In 2022, I removed myself from toxic and unhealthy environments in order to maintain a sense of peace,” continues Scavella. “By doing this, I also found myself growing spiritually and finding myself closer within the church community.”

For Saint Leo students, 2022 felt like a whirlwind of growth and learning- which was exciting, but sometimes stressful. Students are looking forward to ‘coming into their own’ in 2023, and continuing the pursuit of stronger bonds with friends, family, and their spiritual community. They are looking forward to expanding their professional and educational careers and becoming better people.
