Medieval games are a dime a dozen ranging from the “Elder Scrolls” franchise to the “Mount” franchise. However, the latest medieval themed game tries it’s best at putting the player in the shoes of someone in that era with a lot more realism in mind. When people think about the medieval era, they more than likely think of knights in shining armor, and a cleaner version than what it was. “Kingdom Come: Deliverance” is a game that crashes through that normal visual by showing the gritty and dirty life of the regular individual around that time. Developed by Warhorse Studios, and published by Deep Silver, this survival, action, role-playing game marks a milestone in the realism of medieval games.
The story puts the player in the shoes of a young peasant named Henry. As the son of a blacksmith, Henry has the urge to be more than just a simple peasant and live a life of an adventurer. However, his father states how dangerous that life is and how it’s safer in their small village. Ironically, the village is then attacked, and many innocent people are killed, including Henry’s parents. Fleeing to the nearest castle, Henry finds refuge and vows to kill the man who murdered his parents and get back at the people who ransacked his village. His quest begins, and the player is allowed the freedom to make decisions that could change the story or end in death.
This game is set in an open world environment and is in a first-person view. In addition, the game provides an RPG-like experience as the player can choose from skills such as warrior, bard, thief or hybrids of commonly found classes. The player has 16 slots on their person for armor, shields and weapons. Clothing also has the realism of layering, which people did when wearing armor back then. Armor and weapons degrade and require repairs eventually, as well. The player will also need to eat, drink and occasionally sleep to stay healthy, much like real life.
Fighting people in this game can be either rewarding or very costly to the character depending on what the player is battling; weapons have realistic physics and weight, making some battles be decided by choice of weapon or by an added amount of stamina. Players who are thieves can also gather materials by lock picking or pickpocketing, but they also risk the chance of getting caught.
Quests are the main way of getting objectives in this game. The creators made sure that all questlines were nonlinear, unlike most games that have a straightforward questline. There are multiple ways and decisions players can choose with any quest obtained in the game.
There are a few issues with the game, for instance, the large amounts of bugs that come with many of these realistic-style games. Another issue is the difficulty of the game; it isn’t until later in the game when the player has better skills and weapons where weaker enemies won’t do much damage. This can become frustrating really fast and can deter some from getting the game.
“Kingdom Come: Deliverance” is a fun experience with enough patience and time put into the game. With a compelling and changeable story, this game can be played for an enormous number of hours.
