Christmas Songs You Just Can’t Stand

Despite being the most joyful season of the year, Christmas time also comes with its share of problems. For each of those holiday hits you just can’t get enough of is another Christmas tune you just can’t stand. As chosen by members f the Lions’ Pride Staff, here are the corniest, depressing, and just downright annoying Christmas songs that incessantly dance through your head like visions of sugar plums.

At number eight we have an enduring holiday hit that Layout Editor John Hall absolutely abhors, “Christmas Time is Here.” This almost haunting little ditty is most recognizably heard the timeless holiday special “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown,” and is usually a hit among fans of the Peanuts classic. But Hall can not stand the number.

“It’s that whininess that the kids sing that opening song with,” laughed Hall. “Every time I here it just makes me cringe.”

This next upbeat Christmas song just keeps bringing Online Operations Editor Kimberly Scott-Williams’ down. At number seven is “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The song may foretell Chris Cringle’s arrival, but it has Scott-Williams ready to head for the hills.

“I’ve heard it too many times,” groaned Scott-Williams. “It’s annoying to me now.”

Though he enjoys the 1964 stop-motion animation feature “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” contributing writer Austin Chiavaroli always has to fast forward through one obnoxious musical number. Filling your number six spot is the Burl Ives hit “Holly Jolly Christmas.”

“I hear it all the time,” said Chiavaroli. “It gets inside your head and it just won’t stop.”

People often prefer covers of traditional holiday numbers to new, original Christmas ditties. Sad, but true. There is one new seasonal tune that Graphics Editor Ivanna Villalba can’t stand above all others. “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber makes the list at number five.

“Let’s face it,” Villalba laughed. “Nobody likes Justin Bieber.”

Editor in Chief Cassidy Whitaker prefers the sappy holiday tidings on the Hallmark channel, not in her music. Which is why her pick, “Grown Up Christmas List,” comes in at number four.

“I find it annoying and sad,” explained Whitaker. “Whenever it comes on the Christmas Pandora station I get angry because it just annoys me.”

Speaking of sad Christmas tunes, contributing writer Kristin Vitagliano’s pick can be called the pinnacle of sappy holiday songs. In the number three spot we have “The Christmas Shoes.”

“I don’t even know how to describe the song,” Vitagliano said. “It’s just so depressing. Who wants to hear a song about someone dying for Christmas?”

Your number two pick was selected by Online Sports Editor Collin Moran and Copy Editor Ali Masso. While “Silent Night” is a traditional hit beloved by many, it nearly puts Moran and Masso to sleep.

“It’s just so boring,” Moran groaned.

Drum roll, please! The number one most despised Christmas song, selected by both Scott-Williams and Multimedia Manager Ilouisa Salazar, is “The Little Drummer Boy.”

“I hate the parum pum pum pum,” said Salazar. “It’s so repetitive and the song is, like, five minutes long!”

So, there you have it. The horrendous holiday hits that bring out the humbug in everybody. If you would like to share your own least loved Christmas songs with us or disagree with a song’s spot on our list, please post your picks on the Lion’s Pride Facebook page.
