“Black Mirror,” a British television series, has consistently released a season every year for the last four years. “Black Mirror” is a science fiction series that is set in the future and deals with the concept of technology eventually going badly for humanity, similar to a modern-day “Twilight Zone.”
The first episode of the recently released fourth season is titled “USS Callister,” it begins with a not-so-subtle homage to “Star Trek.” Throughout the episode, Robert Daley is a CTO of a technology entertainment company for his day job, but at night, he is Commander Daley of the USS Callister. Daley is a technical genius who created a game system that is similar to a modern-day VR (virtual reality) headset. He created it to connect to the gamer’s temple, allowing the player to delve mentally into the game. Daley’s virtual reality includes him being the commander of a spaceship called the USS Callister which also has characters from his everyday life. However, to gain a member of his spaceship, Daley has to acquire the DNA from a real-life person. These characters are aware that they have been virtually downloaded, knowing they are not the real them. However, will all of them comply with Commander Daley’s orders?
After losing her daughter at the park, Marie is paranoid that she will lose her daughter again in the second episode entitled “Arkangel.” To prevent this, she agrees to a trial of a new GPS system called Arkangel that will be inserted into her daughter’s temple. Arkangel allows Marie to track her daughter on a map, view on a tablet what her daughter sees, and censor what her daughter can see. Marie finds that Arkangel eases her maternal worries throughout her daughter’s childhood, but she runs into other issues when her daughter becomes a teenager.
Guilt can weigh heavily on a person for a long time, which happens to Mia after a deadly incident that occurs with her friend in the third episode, “Crocodile.” Later on, Mia decides to separate herself from her friend to help clear her guilty conscience and focus on her career. This distraction works for a while, but what will happen when her friend wants to come clean?
Imagine being able to enter the world of a dating app. In episode four, “Hang the DJ,” Frank and Amy delve into the dating world, but every match is set for them. Each match has an expiration date that will help the dating simulation gather information from their dates, ultimately leading them to their “perfect match.” However, issues arise when Frank and Amy cannot come to terms with the fact that they are not each other’s perfect match.
The fifth episode, “Metal Head,” takes place in a world where humankind must fight for their life from a ruthless ruler. While in an abandoned warehouse, scavengers search for a replacement of an important item, but it turns into a run from death when they cross paths with a merciless enemy. Will the humans be able to outsmart their foe, or will they meet their demise?
In the sixth episode, “Black Museum,” a young lady visits the Black Museum while traveling to meet her dad for his birthday. The Black Museum is known for its criminal technological
artifacts. Throughout the one-on-one tour, the guide gives in-depth stories of several artifacts. Each artifact has an interesting background, but none are as impressive as the main attraction.
All four seasons of “Black Mirror” are currently streaming on Netflix. None of the episodes rely on each other, allowing the viewer to pick and choose whichever episode appeals to them. The show is known for its twists and turns, keeping the viewer engaged throughout each episode.
