“A Bad Moms Christmas,” the sequel to “Bad Moms” (2016) uses comedy to highlight an issue that many Americans face during the holiday season. The mothers of “Bad Moms” realize that they have been overworking themselves to make Christmas perfect by societal standards to the point that they are unable to enjoy Christmas themselves and spend real quality time with their children separate from the superficial aspects of the holiday.
The moms, Amy (Mila Kunis, “Friends with Benefits”), Kiki (Kristen Bell, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), and Carla (Kathryn Hahn, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”) vow to take back Christmas and take the pressure off themselves.
Their plan is immediately thwarted when all three of their mothers decide to drop into town for the holidays. These Grandmas, Ruth (Christine Baranski, “The Good Wife”), Isis (Susan Sarandon, “Thelma & Louise”), and Sandy (Cheryl Hines, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) each have their own ideas about how Christmas should be celebrated. The moms become stressed out all over again and somehow must make compromises with their mothers and collaborate with them to provide the children with their best Christmas yet.
The cast of the film is comprised of hilarious women that deliver over-the-top cheeky comedy. “A Bad Moms Christmas” shows that the challenges of parenting never truly end even as one’s children grow into adults themselves by representing three generations of a family sticking it out through both the anxiety and the joy that is inevitable in an American winter.
Because most of the humor is vulgar, those under 18 years old should not view this movie, and the film does cater more to female audiences. However, all generations of adults will appreciate the storyline.
The soundtrack of the film maintains its upbeat and cheery yet sassy tone with contemporary pop covers of Christmas songs like “12 Days of Christmas” by Colbie Caillat featuring Aloe Blacc and “Jingle Bells” by Gwen Stefani.
“Bad Moms” and its sequel were written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. The duo is known for writing the screenplays for all three “Hangover” movies. “The Hangover” (2009) is an iconic comedy that defines an era, and Lucas and Moore continue to live up to their reputation for comic genius.
For its anti-materialist message veiled in spunky dialogue, “A Bad Moms Christmas” gets a score of 3.5 out of 5 paws.
