The Saint Leo University men’s tennis team had one of the winningest records last season after finishing 13-5. Coach Berryhill, his staff, and the players are already off to a hot start, ready to repeat a successful season. Already 2-0, the Lions are ranked in the top 10 coming in strong at No. 7. With a 13-5 match differential, the Lions are looking to continue their dominance in their upcoming game against rival school Florida Southern College. Coach Berryhill seemed to be pleased by his team’s performance, explaining how proud he is that his guys work through adversity to achieve victory. Junior athletes Thomas Grinberg and Vincent Suillerot won their first doubles match 8-3, while senior Jaime Bueno and sophomore Willem Van Den Akker finished the event strong by winning the third doubles match 9-7. Doubles were not the only place Grinberg, Suillerot, and Bueno found success as they went undefeated in their singles matches. Grinberg won 6-1, 6-2 while Suillerot achieved a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory in second singles. Bueno won his matches with a 6-4, 6-0 decision. Even with the hot start and success in the past, the Lions understand they should take nothing for granted as anything can happen in sport. They recognize that nothing is guaranteed, and that hard work will help them continue to keep the small winning streak alive. Saint Leo opens the Sunshine State conference in its next match Wednesday, Feb. 21, hosting the Florida Southern Mocs at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The game will be at 3 p.m.
