As the new semester kicks off, campus life resumes and both new and old faces can be seen once again strolling around the University’s facilities. CAB, campus’ activities board, wasted no time getting back into the swing of things and offered a variety of events throughout the first week. Among the activities in CAB’s lineup was a Saint Leo classic: Bingo Night. The first game of the semester took place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 11.

For those who are not accustomed to the event, Bingo Night is a group activity where the students find the opportunity to win prizes while playing bingo. This activity rounds up all the students on campus and sometimes can get pretty intense.

While winning in the game of bingo consists of aligning the letters b-i-n-g-o horizontally, vertically or diagonally, Saint Leo spices up their game play a bit. Depending on the rounds, one can win by filling the numbers in the corners of the bingo card, by filling a tiny box in the bingo card or even by filling all the numbers in the card. Depending on the time or the prize, the audience is given a choice to pick which one that the players will proceed with.

Hosted by the charismatic Jarred Pernier, a junior in Communications Management, Bingo Night could not have been more entertaining. By providing good comic relief and interacting superbly with his public, it would be an understatement to say that Pernier heavily contributed to the success of the night. “Hosting Bingo is such an amazing experience! Being my goofy self, up there really puts me at peace, knowing that who I am truly am really makes people laugh, smile and makes them enjoy their time! That’s what it’s all about, the students. F.A.M.I.L.Y”, Jarred confided.

This month’s Bingo held an interesting batch of prizes. From laundry pads to a 44-inch flat screen, bingo brought back this sweet feeling of excitement that we love. Since the game of bingo relies on luck, everybody had equal chances from the start.

Some lucky contestants have won in previous bingo nights and were equally thrilled to have won this time too. There was even a contestant who won a set of Beats Headphones for the second time.

One of the main attractions of Bingo Night was the mystery box. Functioning in a way similar to the concept of the last man standing, winners of some rounds put their names in the box only to be removed by the next winner who chose the mystery box until there is only one name inside the box. This month’s mystery box winner did not seem too happy about her prize, an easy bake oven, and had to be persuaded by her friends to accept it. The last prize to be won was a 44-inch flat screen. The new owner, freshman Victoria Chin, was really excited about her prize.

While the host was to be praised, credit should also be given to members of CAB were also present in the room handing out the prizes and helping out with the Bingo machine. The atmosphere in the room was radiating with one the core values of the University, community. It felt nice to see people bonding over Bingo.

The next Bingo Night is scheduled for next month and, as usual, the students are welcome to join and take a chance at winning some amazing prizes. Come down to the boardroom and mingle with the lion community, make new friends, and try your luck.
